Recently, a friend asked me what the top three things on my bucket list were. The first thing that came to mind was running a half marathon, you can see the rest of my answers here. I should start by saying that I did not grow up an athlete. I didn't play any sports growing up, and I didn't start being active until less than a year ago. I joined crossfit with my husband several months ago, and the first crossfit class I attended was solely interval running. Sadly, I couldn't run 500 feet. It felt awful. I threw up, and left halfway through trying to hold back tears. It was sad to me, that people in their 50's were doing this class like it was a piece of pie, and me in my 20's couldn't run 500 ft around the block. I continued to take classes, and one day, my husband asked me what my fitness goal was. Since I worked at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, I've wanted to run a half marathon to support the cause, but I was deathly intimidated, and thought I could never in a lifetime even try. But when he asked, I simply answered, I'd like to run a marathon, but that's never gonna happen. His surprise actually surprised me. He said, "why wouldn't that ever happen? Just do it." His confidence inspired me to try just running a mile. I had no recollection of ever running a whole mile without stopping, so I figured I would try. That day, I ran four miles. I didn't know I had it in me, but I was encouraged from then on. I continued to train, upping my milage about two miles a week. My goal is to run three times a week, starting at 8 miles the first day, and running up to ten. Initially, I was running on a treadmill indoors, but yesterday, I decided to go on a 13 mile run outside, to see if I was ready for the marathon. I didn't let myself think about it twice. I put my running shoes on, and took off. A couple hours later, I came back, done.
I am not a fast runner. I don't have a competitive bone in my body. Running long distance was something I knew was impossible for me. But I never start running without speaking this verse out loud "But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength, they will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:31. And when I feel like I can't move one more step, I say it again. And when I start thinking of how impossible this feels, I hear the quiet voice behind me that says "nothing is impossible with God." Luke 1:37
